Like many Cubandishes, ropa vieja originated in Spain and traveled to the Americas with the Spanish people. Legend has it, a poor old man shredded and cooked his own clothes since he did not have money to provide food for his family. He prayed over the meal, opened his eyes, and the clothes had turned into a shredded meat stew – ropa vieja!
