When you think of Santorini, you probably don’t think of wine. Perhaps this is because the grape vines you see look more like small bushes than the grape vines of Napa Valley andTuscany. But, unknown to most, Santorini is the oldest vineyard in Europe. Its vines are actually the only European vines that have continually produced grapes for more than 3,000 years. How is this possible? Well, back around the19th century, an insect called phylloxera destroyed nearly every vineyard in Europe. Santorini grapes survived because the soil mostly consists of pumice, lava and volcanic ash, making it impossible for phylloxera to survive.
