Travel to Cairo using your taste buds. The Suffering Bastard cocktail is the perfect salute to Cairo— take a sip and start dreaming!
The history of the Suffering Bastard cocktail is more interesting than most. In 1942, a trained chemist, Joe Scialom, discovered he enjoyed making drinks and became a bartender at the Shepheard’s Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The hotel bar was favored by British officers during World War II, and one day, Joe heard some of the officers complaining about their hangovers. He decided to concoct a cure and set out to create a cocktail with ingredients he could gather locally. As a people person, word of Joe and his infamous drinks spread and popularized. In 1952, the Shepheard’s Hotel was destroyed in a riot, and Joe was exiled from Egypt shortly thereafter for suspicion of espionage after the Suez Canal Crisis. He was then hired by Conrad Hilton to open bars in Puerto Rico and Havana. However, due to Castro’s Revolution, he had to leave Cuba, but he continued opening bars for Mr. Hilton all over the world.
Take a sip and start dreaming about Egypt, home to archaeological wonders such as the Giza Pyramids and Great Sphinx, the fertile Nile River, and its capital, Cairo, one of the oldest Islamic cities, where ancient Egyptian culture is still alive and well.
